Annual Report 2008:
WG V/4: Image-based and range-based 3D modeling
Chair: Fabio Remondino (Italy)
Co-Chair: Jan Boehm (Germany)
Co-Chair: Qing Zhu (China)
State of Science and Technology of Working Group Topics
In the past year we have seen some advances in increasing the realism of 3D reconstructions coming from image- and range-based modelling techniques. One of the main advances is the increasing of the level of fine geometric details, in particular from image-based approaches, i.e. the development of more accurate procedures to derive dense point clouds from a set of terrestrial images. Photogrammetric methods based on automatic and reliable dense stereo/multi-image matching have exhibited significant improvement. The employment of range sensors for modelling complex objects, heritage documentation and VR applications has increased significantly, mainly due to the performance increase in related hardware and software.
Accomplishments of Working Group during the current year
The WG website has been established and is available at http://www.commission5.isprs.org/wg4/. A Theme Issue of ISPRS Journal on the WG topics has been proposed.
Working Group News
For 2009, the WG is organising the 3rd 3D-ARCH workshop (25-28 February, Trento, Italy) on "3D Virtual Reconstruction and Visualization of Complex Architectures". The previous two events were organized in 2005 in Venice and 2007 in Zurich. In August 2009, the WG will participate in the organisation of Videometrics X, San Diego, California, USA (within SPIE Optics & Photonics). In September 2009, a technical session is planned during Photogrammetric Week in Stuttgart, Germany.
